Edward Gorey—an artist who has prompted interest and fascination both in life and death—is experiencing a resurgence thanks to the many centenary celebrations that have taken place across the globe. The American illustrator is renowned for his inky drawings that are both humorous and unnerving, and 2025 marks 25 years since his death and his would-be 100th birthday.

New College Library has showcased its rich collection of Edward Gorey’s works—kindly bequeathed to us by alumnus David Mann. We celebrated the centenary of Gorey by giving readers an insight into the life, art, and character of the polarising figure. By discussing select examples from the collection and highlighting the key themes explored in 91�ƹ�ֱ��’s exhibition this Note demonstrates Gorey’s enduring influence and his place within 91�ƹ�ֱ��’s diverse and remarkable collection.
